afcon-2025:-super-eagles-lose-2-1-to-rwanda-in-final-afcon-qualifier-match

The Amavubi of Rwanda triumphed over Nigeria’s Super Eagles with a 2-1 victory in the final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Rwanda made a comeback from a goal down to clinch the win, on Monday, overturning the Eagles’ lead. This defeat marked the only loss for the Super Eagles in their qualification campaign.
Despite already securing qualification for the tournament, interim coach Austin Eguavoen made seven changes to the team that drew 1-1 with the Benin Republic in their previous match. Victor Osimhen was replaced by Victor Boniface, while Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi were also dropped in favour of Moses Simon and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Maduka Okoye started in goal, taking over from Stanley Nwabali, who was absent due to his father’s passing. The numerous changes failed to revitalise the Eagles, who struggled to make an impact for much of the first half.
In the second half, Eguavoen substituted Samuel Chukwueze and Frank Onyeka for Iheanacho and Alhassan Yusuf. Chukwueze soon brought a moment of brilliance; however, Nigeria’s celebration was short-lived as Rwanda responded with two goals in three minutes. This match marked the first time the Super Eagles lost to Rwanda in six encounters.
