Armed men attacked a military training camp in Mali’s capital, Bamako, early Tuesday morning, according to state television, ORTM. The attackers, described as “terrorists,” struck a gendarmerie school near the city’s airport. Gunfire rang out across the city at around 5:30 AM local time, and videos shared on social media showed plumes of smoke rising from the area.

ORTM reported that the situation is now “under control,” and “combing operations” are underway at the attack site. However, it remains unclear who was behind the assault. Mali has been grappling with an Islamist insurgency for over a decade, and despite the military seizing power in a 2021 coup, the violence has persisted.

The coup leaders had accused the previous government of failing to address the insurgency effectively, but three years later, attacks continue without signs of resolution. The instability underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Mali in combating militant groups within its borders.
