The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have clinched their place in the 2025 U-20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), following a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Niger Republic in the WAFU B U-20 Championship semi-final. The thrilling match, held at the Stade Kegue in Lome, Togo, on Sunday night, saw Nigeria turn the game around after an early setback.

Niger Republic struck first, scoring within the opening ten minutes, putting Nigeria on the back foot. However, the Flying Eagles stayed resilient, skilfully containing Niger’s offensive attacks through the first 30 minutes.

In the 35th minute, Clinton Jephta delivered an equaliser with a powerful shot from outside the box, energising the Nigerian side. Just moments into the second half, Jephta scored again, giving Nigeria the lead. Olalekan Alonge then added a third goal, sealing Nigeria’s place in the tournament final with a decisive strike.

The Flying Eagles will now face Ghana in the WAFU B U-20 Championship final on Wednesday, where both teams, as finalists, have secured their spots in the 2025 U-20 AFCON.

Looking beyond the AFCON qualifiers, the 2025 U-20 AFCON will also serve as a pathway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, with the four semi-finalists from Africa securing automatic spots for the global tournament in Chile.
